New Delhi: A strong hailstorm hit Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday evening, leading to four deaths, power cuts, and traffic disruptions. This was the second unexpected storm in May, during what is usually the peak of summer.
The storm struck around 7:30 PM, bringing heavy winds, hail, and rain. It caused large-scale damage across many areas. At least 20 trees were uprooted, damaging vehicles and blocking roads. Major traffic delays were reported across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad.
Among the casualties, a man in a wheelchair died after a high-voltage electric wire fell on him at Lodhi Road, around 7:50 PM, according to Delhi Police. In Gokulpuri, a 22-year-old man named Azhar was trapped under a fallen tree during the storm. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Two more storm-related deaths were reported from Ghaziabad, though details are still being confirmed by authorities.
The sudden weather change took many by surprise, with no prior warning from the weather department. The strong winds also damaged electricity poles, leading to power cuts in several areas, including South Delhi, East Delhi, and parts of Noida.
Emergency services and municipal workers were out through the night, clearing fallen trees and restoring power.
